Strictly speaking, the word abstract means to separate or withdraw something from something else.
The term can be applied to art that is based an object, figure or landscape, where forms have been simplified or schematised.
Nasihat Dari Ralph Gibson
If you have your camera and you're going to the drug store to buy a toothpaste, because you're directed, you have an objective (going to buy toothpaste) you might then intersect something worth photographing.
But if you just walk around the street looking for something to shoot, you'll never achieve very much. So from this moment on, from 1970 until this morning I'm always working for a project - with a specific point of departure..
When you look at the work of somebody you admire, that photographer has a visual signature to their work. How would you recognize a Cartier-Bresson, how come you recognize a Robert Frank's so quickly?.. and its because their way of looking is something you recognized. You see how they are perceiving the world.
In order to have a visual signature, I believe its important that the photographer want one very badly. He or she must want their pictures to look different from everybody else's.
